Sparsh Jain, PhD
Dr. Sparsh Jain is a Research Scientist at the Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC), where he leads impaired-driving, behavioral-safety, and crash-data research. His work bridges transportation safety, neuroscience, physiological sensing, and human factors to understand driver capabilities and evaluate technologies for safer mobility. He also leads National Safety Council-funded teen-driver research evaluating advanced driver training and real-world safety outcomes.
Dr. Jain earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Virginia Tech. where his doctoral work combined physiological sensing, driver monitoring, naturalistic driving data, and controlled driving studies to investigate alcohol and cannabis impairment. He also earned his M.S. from Virginia Tech, where he studied human sleep and brain-state dynamics governing learning and memory, including in patients with epilepsy. He also enjoyed guest lecturing pre-medical students on neurodevelopmental disorders.
Dr. Jain serves on the Transportation Research Board’s Standing Committee on Behavioral Safety within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and on the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Scientific Program Committee. He is an Associate Editor of Traffic Injury Prevention and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Safety Research and Data in Brief.
Dr. Jain’s work is driven by a commitment to understanding how road users interact with complex transportation systems and translating that knowledge into technologies, research methods, and safety strategies that expand safe mobility and save lives.
