As many as 80% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) also have sleep disturbances that may emerge as early as age 2 and persist into adulthood. Common disturbances include delayed sleep onset, disruptive bedtime behavior, mid-sleep wakening’s, early morning wakening’s and decreased total sleep time. Inadequate sleep and poor sleep quality is also associated with endocrine, immune and cardiovascular problems.

This four-year multi-site project (with Emory University and Cleveland Clinic) will advance outcome measurement of sleep disturbances in future clinical trials through development of a parent-rated instrument for measurement of sleep in youth with ASD. Online assessments and actigraphy measurement will help determine the validity and reliability of the parent-rated instrument that was created.
