Title: Towards a Holistic Research Agenda for Autistic Adulthood

Speaker Bio: Dr. Elaine B. Clarke is a postdoctoral fellow at LifeSPAN Autism lab led by Dr. Vanessa Bal in the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University. Elaine earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in human development and psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she worked under the mentorship of Dr. Catherine Lord. Dr. Clarke’s research leverages developmental approaches to characterize and quantify the adult experiences of autistic individuals. Her work has been funded by Autism Speaks and the Autism Science Foundation.

Talk Summary: The number of adults with autism diagnoses is growing. While many studies focus on challenges this population faces in achieving “normative” outcomes like full-time jobs or independent living, such goals may not be appealing to, nor realistic for, all autistic adults. There is a need for better and broader ways to measure and promote life success for individuals of all abilities. This talk explores alternative indicators of success for autistic adults and highlights key directions for future research.
