Pharmacologic and Non-Pharmacologic Treatment of Persons with IDD and Co-occurring Mental Illness and/or Behavioral Challenges

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are an underserved and under-researched population in mental health settings. 2% of the U.S. population is estimated to have intellectual disability and 30-40% of those individuals are thought to have a co-occurring psychiatric and/or behavioral disorder.  Unfortunately, there remain many gaps in the education and experience of most mental health professionals when they see such patients in practice; particularly in community settings. This presentation with cover both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments for persons with IDD and serious mental illness. The presentation will also discuss persons with autism spectrum disorders with co-occurring psychiatric and behavioral disorders.   A particular focus will be treatment of individuals with IDD and co-occurring depression and anxiety.
