The Nisonger Center’s Health Promotion and Healthcare Parity Program has invited Positive Exposure: The Spirit of Difference and Rick Guidotti to The Ohio State University and COSI for two speaking events and photography exhibitions that aim to transform public perceptions of people with disabilities and challenge stigmas. This exhibition was made possible through a grant from The Columbus Foundation.

Positive Exposure: The Spirit of Difference is a multimedia campaign to redefine our perceptions of beauty and to let people see individuals with genetic, cognitive, physical and behavioral differences as vibrant and valuable members of our society.

Rick Guidotti, the founder and director of Positive Exposure: The Spirit of Difference, was once a fashion photographer working in New York and Milan, but a chance encounter with a girl with albinism opened his eyes to the limited scope of beauty within fashion. He left the world of high fashion to travel around the globe challenging societal notions of beauty by photographing people with disabilities as people first and foremost – people who do not define their lives by their conditions (positiveexposure.org).

Positive Exposure: The Spirit of Difference strives to transform not just public perceptions of people with disabilities, but also those of the medical establishment. Often, individuals with genetic, physical, or behavioral differences are depicted in medical textbooks in ways that are dehumanizing or sad. It is useful to learn about these conditions, but we need to consider the whole human being, not just the diagnosis.

The exhibit will show at The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Prior Health Sciences Library and at COSI. Rick will be coming to each exhibit to speak about the show.

Rick will be presenting to medical students, faculty and staff at noon on Monday, October 21, 2013, in room 550 on the fifth floor of Ohio State’s Prior Health Sciences Library. Positive Exposure: The Spirit of Difference photography will be on display in a gallery on the fifth floor of Prior Health Sciences Library from October 21 through November 27. The Nisonger Center’s Health Promotion and Healthcare Parity Program seeks to combat the disparities in health care faced by people with disabilities. The exhibit at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center creates a great opportunity for medical students and professionals to see people with disabilities in a new light.

At noon on Sunday, October 20, Rick will come to the COSI Atrium to give a presentation for the broader Columbus audience. Positive Exposure: The Spirit of Difference photography will be on display at COSI from September 21, 2013, through January 5, 2014.
